Big Dog Plays Robin Hood At Sherwood
2010 GGW Event No. 8
For Golfers Gone Wild, Saturday, May 29 was like the Tale of Robin Hood. You remember the story. Robin Hood and his merry men lived in Sherwood Forest. They robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. The GGW has a handicap system that serves to do the same thing. Handicaps should level the playing field and spread the wealth to us all. However, something seems to have gone wrong. The rich just seem to get richer as it was Big Dog who got to play Robin Hood at Sherwood.
Sherwood Golf Course in Schererville, Indiana has a forest of trees, low spots and other hidden dangers making it a difficult, once a year stop for GGW. A layout of 6248 yards, par 71, Sherwood boasts of water hazards on 17 of 18 holes and an excellent Friday Night Fish Fry that attracts travelers to this remote hamlet. The Fish Fry we thoroughly enjoyed. But as for the water hazards, most of us struggled to evade.
The weather was ideal, but spoiling the day for the rest of the merry men was Big Dog. Lonnie won his 4th GGW event of the season shooting a net 69. Big Dog played steady golf, recovered nicely from some errant tee shots and robbed the rest of us poor golfers for first place money.
Coming in a distant second was Quick Draw with net 75 and third was Grade A net 76. The rest of the motley crew turned out to be an assortment of commoners, peasants, and ne’er-do-wells including Country Strong (78), Rifleman (79), TaylorMade Kid (79), Cadillac Blue (80) and The Gambler (85).
Rifleman and Country Strong also served as official court jesters for their foursomes. For comedic relief, both men started their rounds with blow ups; each shooting 10 on the first hole. They exhibited a fine bit of improvisational acting, while impersonating real golfers. When they finally finished hole #1, there was polite Applause for both. At that point, we were all quite amused.
Then, Rifleman, playing role of Little John, disappeared after the 5th hole. He reappeared without shoes and covered in black mud (which, by the way, went nicely with his psychedelic costume colored shorts). Very Funny. Later, Country Strong, playing minstrel Friar Tuck, found some more trouble. Ron spent several minutes trying to retrieve what had to be the last golden golf ball on earth. He emerged from the quicksand with a new nickname “Mudfoot”. Encore. Encore. The rest of ye merry men were heartily entertained.
The first matches of the season were played at Sherwood. All four were over before the final few holes. Quick Draw (+2) put the lash to Cadillac Blue, 4&2. TaylorMade Kid (even) stole from The Gambler, 3&2. Grade A (+2) flogged Rifleman, 3&2. And, Big Dog (-8) mauled Country Strong, 4&3.
GGW scheduled two rounds for Memorial Day weekend. This first show was staged at Sherwood; featuring Big Dog as Robin Hood; robbing from the poor and giving to rich; amusement from real live court jesters; a Fish Fry Dinner after the round with serving wenches at our beck and call. Good Times, Turkey Creek in Merrillville on Monday cannot possibly be show better.
FYI: For those of you who don’t remember details, the movie “Robin Hood” also premiered this weekend at theatres near you. However, GGW’s version of the tale was far more entertaining.
The famed Augusta Golf Club moved its Masters Tournament up to Easter Weekend this year. Bowing to our own tradition, Golfers Gone Wild held its Opening Round on Saturday, April 7 at University Park Golf Club. Unlike the Masters playoff finish between Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuzien, our first GGW Tour Event wasn't close. Steady Eddie had a Masterful Start to the 2012 Golf Season. Eddie shot a smoking hot 80 and beat the rest of the field by more than 5 strokes net. Steady Eddie also won…See More
