Over the past two weeks, we’ve held the 5th GGW Tour Event at Coyote Run and the 6th GGW Tour Event at Tuckaway. Both courses and results are familiar to you regular Golfers Gone Wild. For everyone else, here is a short recap.
Coyote Run, located in Flossmoor, Illinois is a short 6000 yard par 71 with significant water affecting shots on several holes. Most GGW know where the hazards lie and avoided blow-up problems to create a very competitive round on Saturday, April 30.
The first foursome tore up this track. They recorded six birdies and fourteen pars as a group. Emerging as the winner of the Coyote Run event was Lucky Lefty. Actually, requiring little in the way of luck Lefty shot an 83 net 66. In the same foursome, competitive challengers Bigg Dogg and Steady Eddie finished a single stroke behind both shooting 84. In fact, all but 1 player played below or near handicap index. And only 2 of 12 players carded scores above 100. Despite the wind, we ate up that course.
The GGW was feeling not so full after last week at Tuckaway. Located near the Illinois-Indiana border, Tuckaway Golf Club is actually tucked away in what is still a horse farming community in Crete. Tuckaway was designed in 1960 and featured 6,192 yards of sloping fairways, tall oaks and small, postage stamp size greens that tested the abilities of most.
Coming out on top on Saturday, May 7, was Steady Eddie. Eddie shot a remarkable 91, beating a small eight man, day before Mother’s Day, field. TaylorMade Kid (92) was the only other player who shot in the 90’s. Everyone had at least three, 3 putt holes as GGW struggled with those not so tasty greens. Most players were less than satisfied, and Kappatain Styles even vomited up a downright nasty 123.
That nasty score didn’t stop K Styles from winning 8 skins on that day. Also winning skins over the past two weeks were Steady Eddie, Lucky Lefty and TaylorMade Kid with 4 each. Medicine Man and Silent Assassin won their first skins of the year. A guest player, Art Sanders won 6 skins at Coyote Run. And Country Strong won 8 skins over the past two weeks including the first EAGLE recorded by GGW this season on #3 par4 at Tuckaway. Despite missing a week, TaylorMade Kid maintained his overall 2011 skins lead with 32.
With results from the last two weeks, GGW now has a new No. 1 Contender in Match Play Competition.
Lucky Lefty took out Steady Eddie, while winning the Week 5 Event at Coyote Run. The next week Steady Eddie, who along with winning the Week 6 Event at Tuckaway, also beat TaylorMade Kid. Both matches were decided by a single stroke.
The top half of Match Play Competitors through 6 weeks are:
W-L-T Total Match Pts
Lucky Lefty 7-2-1 131.6
TaylorMade Kid 7-3-0 123.5
Country Strong 6-3-0 116.1
Quick Draw 4-5-1 102.2
Bigg Dogg 6-2-0 98.7
Steady Eddie 5-6-0 96.9
Rifleman 4-5-0 96.1
Way Cool 4-1-0 86.9
GGW Match Play schedule was determined by a completely random computerized formula for the entire season before the first event this year.
But randomly, this coming weekend, GGW has a pivotal matchup of No. 1 vs No. 2 when Lucky Lefty (-2.6) is scheduled to match scores with TaylorMade Kid. And with further irony, there is also a scheduled match-up of No. 3 vs No. 4; as Country Strong (-4.2) matches strokes with Quick Draw.
With the schedule pre-set. Play at the Silver Lake South Course should be most competitive, like Coyote Run; which saw the 18th career Tour Win for Lucky Lefty. Silver Lake will also be tough tester like Tuckaway, where Steady Eddie won his 1st of what could be many career Tour Wins.
Just for the record, Way Cool is the reigning GGW Champion on the North Course and Quick Draw holds the GGW Title on the South. But whether next Saturday’s winner be Lucky, Steady, Country, Quick, Cool, Mo, Larry or Curly; whatever stooge ultimately wins at Silver Lake is up to you.
