GGW Roasts Turkey Creek
2012 GGW Event No. 21
What's a perfect recipe for outstanding day of golf?
First you need to start with good weather, not too hot or too cold. Set the temperature somewhere between 80 and 90 degrees. Make sure it stays dry. Then find a good golf course layout, it should be firm but fair. Not too tough, not too tender. Then mix in a combination of Talent and a few pieces of Raw Meat. And slow simmer the whole thing in some competitive juice. And your golf will turn out.....Perfecto!
On Saturday, July 21, Golfers Gone Wild had such a perfect day; as we feasted on Turkey Creek Golf Course in Merrillville, Indiana. Turkey Creek is not the easiest course, laying out at 6,202 yards par 70. It has water hazards on 12 holes and several holes like #3, #5, #6, #12, #14 and #17 with forced water carries to the greens. Still, you GGW carded 8 birdies, a tour record in a single round, plus played 48 other holes at par and thoroughly Roasted Turkey Creek.
Leading the way was Lucky Lefty, who had 4 of those birdies. Miller sprinkled in a ton of talent, some decision-making that only comes with experience, to his unfathomable on course luck and ate up that Turkey. Lefty shot a personal best round of 79, breaking that magic 80 for the first time in his career.
He needed to shoot his best. Because, twelve GGW showed up for our 21st Tour Event of 2012. The competition was stiff, especially from Cadillac Blue. Cadillac, driving deep in the fairways all day, posted a sweet score of 86 net 65, including a birdie push on tough #14. Other players were just as competitive. Double D placed third with a 96 net 69. Rifleman was fourth with 93 net 70 and Steady Eddie came in fifth with 84 net 71, including a birdie at #6 that was 2 cups and a teaspoon from being a hole in one.
Seven other players in the field also spent the day fixing up some good eats. Way Cool cooked up a net 72. Quick Draw and Prime Time served up net 73's. The Gambler stirred in a 75. However, providing raw meat for the rest of us, were Bigg Dogg, Mr. Benny and Country Strong who all shot net 76.
Country Strong, despite coming in last in the field, won 4 skins with his birdie on #16. Quick Draw also won a skin with yet another birdie at #10. But the biggest winner on the day was Lucky Lefty, of course, whose 4 birdies earned 9 skins.
With this win and a third place finish the next day, Lucky Lefty extended his GGW Points lead to almost 20,000 over second place Steady Eddie. Lefty and eight other golfers played on Sunday in a round organized by Spin City. A GGW newcomer, Keith placed second with a 88 net 72. This minor GGW Tour Event No. 22 was sanctioned at The Brassie, a tough links style golf course in Chesterton, Indiana. The Brassie outing marked the return of TaylorMade Kid to competition. Taylor still playing with effects of injury, managed to shoot an 89 net 73 and finished tied for fourth.
But, the biggest mover in the standings after the weekend was Cadillac Blue. Curry continued his weekend assault on fairways and greens. Cadillac posted his GGW low ever score of 84 (net 64) and that means Blue Was The Best at The Brassie. With his victory on Sunday and strong second place finish on Saturday, Cadillac Blue moved from 7th to 3rd place in the GGW point standings.
