Quick Draw’s New Shot Shines at Silver Lake South
2012 GGW Event No. 12
Bright afternoon sunshine greeted you Golfers Gone Wild at Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park. GGW sanctioned its 12th Tour Event of the 2012 season on Saturday, June 9. Silver Lake has two familiar 18 hole layouts. And now sports a new driving range. You played the par 70 South Course at 5948 yards. As is their standard, the course seemed to be in ship shape. Twelve of you took on the challenge despite sizzling 90 degree heat and blazing sun.
Shining most brilliant was Perry Gunn aka Quick Draw. PG shot 82 net 64 to win for the first time this season. Quick Draw had struggled during the start of the year working on a new shot shape. Previously noted for his strong use of a slicing cut shot, Saturday, Quick Draw frequently pulled out the bag a new high hard 50+ yard right-to-left draw shot and managed to hit fairway after fairway. Quick Draw’s day included an impressive run of five straight pars on the back nine, on way to earning 10,382 GGW Points for the first place finish.
He needed every one of those par shots to stave off Night Train. Lionel shot a super low 80 net 67 and seized second place. Night Train’s 41-39 card also swept the Nassau bet by 1 stroke on each side. Night Train will be a solid contender for 2012 Player of The Year. Coming in third place was 2011 Player of the Year, Country Strong. Ron shot an 87, 1 under par net 69. Country Strong has already won once and has placed second or third place another five times out of the ten GGW events he’s played this year.
Also placing themselves on the sunny side of the street were Rifleman, 94 net 70, in fourth. And Lucky Lefty, 88 net 71, in fifth. Conner (3,074 Pts) and Anderson (1,107 Pts) always seem to save just enough shots to earn big GGW points each week. Cadillac Blue had a remarkable round making birdie on 2 of the first 3 holes. But, he was unable to sustain those sweet swings and finished sixth with 93 net 72.
The sunny forecast for high handicap brothers, Hawk (74) and Mr Benny (75), turned partly cloudy after-round. Both posted respectable net scores and struck the ball well with few blow-ups. Current GGW Points and Season Skins Leader, Steady Eddie (76) also shot a decent net score. But, after supposedly working all night and then playing all day in the heat, he was said to be running on smoke fumes by the end of the round.
The sun never did shine for three other players, Bigg Dogg (80), TaylorMade Kid (82) and Silent Assassin (84), who all had gloomy, suspect rounds. Each has secured Player of the Year honor in the past, but none have played to date with the frequency or success of their championship years. Bigg Dogg(family), TaylorMade Kid (work) and Silent Assassin (vacation); finally showed up after being missing in action for the past several weeks. GGW hopes they finally have their priorities (GOLF) in order for the rest of the year.
At least Bigg Dogg won 1 skin with a birdie on #13.
Other results from our usual skins game saw Country Strong’s birdie on par 5 #12, just one hole prior to Lonnie, stealing 9 skins. This one birdie made Ron the top skins winner at the Silver Lake event. Those two early birdies gave Cadillac Blue the first 3 skins. Night Train won 3 skins using a solid finish with pars on #16 and #18. Another key solo par on #15 served up the other 2 skins to Rifleman.
Despite the impressive par string, and usually known to say he’s only “playin’ for skins”, the overall event winner did not win a single one. But even though Perry was shut out of the skins game, none of the shine could be taken off of a sensational round of golf by Quick Draw.
