Way Cool Wows Crowd at Memorial Day Major
2012 GGW Event No. 8
Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, Golfers Gone Wild held its 8th Tour Event of 2012 May 26 at Heritage Bluffs. Located in Channahon, Illinois, Heritage Bluffs Golf Course has been a regular stop on the GGW Tour for the past four years. The course played short but tough with a slope rating of 125. Play from the white tees at 6038 yards, par 72 was fair. The weather was perfect.
You had to be there. On second thought, with the largest group of golfers ever recorded for a GGW event, you probably were there…
In the first of four major events scheduled this year, each coinciding with holiday weekends, fifteen of you Golfers Gone Wild congregated on the first tee, ready to take on your competition. Emerging from that well-dressed scrum and finishing far ahead of the pack was Way Cool. Wayne shot an outstanding 88 net 65, demonstrating the confidence of someone who must play a lot of golf…..somewhere. Just not with us. In only his third event of the 2012 season (2nd time in the winners’ circle), Way Cool Wowed the Crowd at this Memorial Day Major and earned 20,598 GGW Points in one afternoon.
Coming in second was another less than frequent flyer, Double D. Dudley shot a 98 with strong pars on four holes and rode his undeservedly high handicap to a net 70 finish. Another fair weather player, Grade A finished third. With the temperatures finally warm enough for him to get loose and playing for the first time since opening day, Grady shot an even par net 72. Double D picked up 14,215 GGW points in placing second and Grade A earned 10,205 after showing in third.
This first of four majors brought out close to a full house. Following the leaders in fourth was L-Train (73, 6,066 GGW points), who also won the overall Nassau bet. And fifth place Cadillac Blue (74, GGW 2,083 points). Both captured the double points that come with a top 5 finish in a major event.
The remaining players had rounds that were episodes of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The Good Rounds, 3-4 strokes above net par were turned in by Rifleman (75), Steady Eddie (75), Quick Draw (76), The Gambler (76) and Hawk (76).
Bad Rounds caught up with Lucky Lefty (79), Prime Time (80), and TaylorMade Kid (82). And a beautiful day turned into Ugly Rounds for Mr Benny(85) and Country Strong (87).
As usual we played a skins game. Given such a crowd, birdies were required to earn skins. The biggest winner was Hawk. Even though Al shot 104, his eagle-eyed birdie putt on #13 picked up 6 skins. Grade A earned 5 skins with an A+ plus birdie on #16. Hot all day, Way Cool coldly made birdie on #4 to earn 3 skins.
With a win in the year’s first major, Way Cool jumps into the lead in points by 2,283 over second place Steady Eddie. Though Mixson still has a commanding season long lead in skins with 40 over Quick Draw having won 19 and Country Strong holding at 18. Complete statistics available upon request or on the website.
After this Memorial Day Major at Heritage Bluffs, Way Cool is now a major contender for 2012 Player of the Year. Next weekends’ event at Tuckaway Golf Course in Crete, may not have the same major payoff, but there is still time for you to make this GGW Crowd say Wow.
